The Foundation Of Precision Measurement: Silicon Nitride Ceramic Reference Blocks

The Foundation of Precision Measurement: Silicon Nitride Ceramic Reference Blocks

Introduction

Silicon Nitride Ceramic Reference Blocks are core reference devices in modern precision manufacturing and metrology. Manufactured from high-performance silicon nitride (Si₃N₄) ceramic material via advanced powder metallurgy and precision machining processes, they offer unparalleled dimensional stability, an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion, and exceptional mechanical properties. They are the ideal replacement for traditional steel gauge blocks, providing a reliable standard of length for high-precision measurement.

Applications

This product is primarily used for:

  • Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM): For accuracy verification and routine performance monitoring.

  • Precision CNC Machine Tools: For machine calibration and error compensation.

  • Laser Interferometers: Acting as reference mirrors

  • Metrology Laboratories: Serving as the highest standard for length transfer and calibration of measuring tools.

  • Quality control and production in ultra-precision industries like semiconductor manufacturing and optical processing.

Key Advantages

  • Exceptional Stability: Highly resistant to deformation from temperature and humidity changes, offering far greater long-term dimensional stability than metal.

  • Superior Wear Resistance: High Vickers hardness provides extreme wear resistance, ensuring a long service life and maintained accuracy.

  • Lightweight: Density is only 40% that of steel, making handling and frequent use easier and reducing operator fatigue.

  • Excellent Corrosion Resistance: Inert to most chemicals, suitable for use in harsh environments, and completely rust-proof.

  • Low Thermal Expansion Coefficient: Minimally affected by ambient temperature fluctuations, guaranteeing more reliable measurement results.

Manufacturing Process

  1. Powder Preparation: High-purity silicon powder is uniformly mixed with minor sintering aids.

  2. Forming: The powder is pressed into a "green" body of the desired shape via dry pressing or Cold Isostatic Pressing (CIP).

  3. Sintering: The body is sintered at high temperature under a protective atmosphere using reaction bonding or hot pressing to achieve high density.

  4. Precision Machining: The sintered block is rough and fine ground using diamond grinding wheels to achieve initial dimensions.

  5. Super Finishing: Lapped to nanometer-level surface roughness and extreme flatness on specialized plates using diamond compound.

  6. Certification & Packaging: Each block comes with a calibration certificate from an authoritative metrology institute and is packaged in anti-static, shock-proof packaging.

Usage Instructions

  • Before Use: Allow the block to stabilize in the measurement room environment for at least 4 hours.

  • Handling: Always wear clean, lint-free gloves to avoid contaminating the measuring faces with skin oils.

  • Wringing: Gently slide the block against another block or surface to create a tight bond via molecular adhesion (wringing).

  • Storage: Store in its dedicated case in a dry, clean, and vibration-free environment.

After-Sales Service

We provide a 12-month warranty. During this period, products with non-human-induced damage will be repaired or replaced free of charge. We also offer for periodic re-calibration and inspection services.

FAQ

  • Q: Why choose Silicon Nitride over Tungsten Carbide or Zirconia?
A: Silicon Nitride offers the best overall balance of hardness, fracture toughness, thermal expansion coefficient, and density.

  • Q: Does it require oiling for rust prevention like steel gauge blocks?
A: No, absolutely not. Silicon Nitride is completely rust-proof. Simply keep it clean and dry.

  • Q: How do I get it recalibrated?
A: We provide professional calibration services or can recommend national metrology institutes. A typical recalibration cycle is 1 year.
